Rugby fans, heading to the sport's world cup in France, have been told that they should "bear in mind" that most travel insurers will not cover them for any claims that occur as a result of drunkenness.

The Association of British Insurers says that people who lose possessions due to being "blind drunk" should not expect any return on their claim.

"Without stereotyping here, [travellers should] bear in mind that a lot of travel policies will not cover losses and claims as a result of alcohol abuse. In fact, most of them won't," the spokesperson commented.

"If you get blind drunk, wonder back one night and realise you've left half your possessions in a bar, you can't expect your travel insurer to pay. It's a standard exclusion. Most claims will not cover you as a result of being drunk," he added.

Statistics from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office reveal that 41 per cent of Brits admit to drinking much more abroad than we would at home.
