The government should sponsor lessons in eco-motoring, as motorists can do their bit for the environment by altering the way they drive, as well as what they drive, it has been claimed.

Roadside assistance experts Mondial UK fired the recommendation in response to a recent UK Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT) report, which revealed that driving at 80mph produces a third more CO2 than driving at 70mph.

Putting on the air conditioning produces ten per cent more fuel in addition which therefore produces more fuel.

"The reality that car and lorry CO2 emissions still outweigh those from air travel, is alarming," Simon Cook, director of automotive at Mondial UK, part of the Allianz Group, commented.

"The choice of vehicle is one step towards greener motoring, but after that, it's how people drive that really matters. Sticking to the speed limit is good for the environment, as well as the wallet as it increases fuel economy. An extra 100lb of weight on board reduces fuel economy by two per cent, so people should remove roof racks and unnecessary baggage."
