SMEs should give remote working opportunities

Industry Insurance News - Published: 19/09/2007
British small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should make sure their employees are able to work from home - so that they can attract as wide a range of prospective workers as possible, it has been claimed.

The National Group on Homeworking says that small companies could potentially be missing out on high-calibre employees by failing to offer the remote working facilities.

"Allowing people to work from home is giving employers access to a different pool of people, a wider pool of workers," Nesta Holden, a spokesperson for the group, commented.

"People want to work from home because of the flexibility; it's a way of fitting your work around your life."

A recent report from National Statistics claimed that the number of people working remotely in the UK was on the rise - with the increase driven "mainly by an increase in people teleworking from different places with home as a base".
