Foreign drivers more likely to crash

Foreign drivers more likely to crash
Heavy goods vehicle drivers from abroad are three times as likely to be involved in a crash as their UK counterparts, according to a report by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The survey from the ABI, whose members account for 94 per cent of all insurance companies in the UK, also shows that foreign national drivers of cars and vans were involved in around 18,000 collisions in the UK last year.

Suzanne Linturn is a sales and marketing director at Peak Performance, an advisory firm specialising in assessing the risks involved with driving at work.

She said that as well as drivers visiting the UK, British companies are increasing the numbers of foreign nationals who drive either as their job or part of it.

Ms Linturn added: "Differences in driving practices, signs and speed limits between the UK and the countries from which these people come can give rise to problems.

"This is exacerbated by the fact that the UK is alone in the EC in driving on the left."

Peak Performance has designed a driving course specially tailored to help UK companies train their foreign drivers entitled 'Driving in the UK Familiarisation Programme'.
