Keys left in the ignitions of commercial vehicles could invalidate insurance claims, warns North Yorkshire Police.

A spate of van thefts in the Selby area has prompted the warning to drivers who leave their vehicles unattended.

They run the risk of losing their livelihoods if insurance companies turn down claims.

It is believed that the latest thefts were targets for an organised gang of criminals travelling in from adjoining counties.

Only a small number of vans to date have been stolen but police are concerned that it may be a developing trend.

Inspector Richard Abbott from the Selby Safer Neighbourhoods Team said: "It is an easy crime to prevent, however I understand why it happens.

"Drivers need to know that their vehicle may be targeted and although they feel safe, should always take out their keys and lock the van securely before leaving it unattended."

He went on to urge drivers to always take out their keys and to lock vans securely before leaving them even though they may feel safe.

Insurance companies can also turn down claims for car insurance thefts if errand-running drivers leave keys in the ignition.
