The government should toughen its policy towards speeding motorists, a road safety charity has urged.

Drivers found guilty of breaking the speed limit should face £1,000 fines and six penalty points.

That is the view of Brake, which today published research warning that drivers on company business were taking more risks than average motorists.

Close to three-quarters (74 per cent) regularly drove 80mph or more on motorways, while 61 per cent said they failed to leave a two second gap between themselves and other vehicles.

Excessive speed is, according to Brake, a contributory factor in 27 per cent of road deaths and the charity is concerned that the message is not getting through.

Last year, the government announced proposals to introduce variable speeding penalties.

This would mean that drivers breaking the 30mph limit by 15mph or more would lose six penalty points.
