Drivers 'warming to speed cameras'

Drivers 'warming to speed cameras'
British motorists are feeling more positive about speed cameras, according to research.

The IMA Motoring Survey showed that speed cameras were more popular than last year, but had still not scaled the heights of 1999.

More than three quarters (78 per cent) approved of speed cameras, which is up nine per cent on last year.

"This survey confirms a recent downward trend in numbers of drivers being caught by safety cameras," said Kevin Delaney, head of road safety for the IAM Trust.

"Hopefully, it is because more believe that safety cameras save lives, but it could be to do with motorists becoming more aware of where cameras are sited.

"Either way, the trends are good news for road safety," he added.

Despite the increase in public approval, there is still a good deal of suspicion about what cameras are used for.

Only 39 per cent believed that they were not used for revenue raising.
