The difference in the cost of car insurance for convertible and non-convertible cars is not that great, according to new research.

A survey by price comparison site Confused.com found that the annual premiums for a convertible car cost, on average, £32 more than a non-convertible, while the lowest difference discovered was just £11.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, believes that if drivers are prepared to shop around for insurance then some good deals can be found for responsible soft-top owners.

"As long as drivers use their common sense and take precautions such as not storing valuables in their car or making sure that their car is parked somewhere safe and secure, there is no reason why they cannot enjoy the benefits of cheaper car insurance," she said.

Figures from the Met Office show that convertible drivers can expect, on average, 55 days of sunshine a year.

According to a recent survey from used car hypermarket Carcraft, there was a 33 per cent increase in soft-top car sales between 2006 and 2007.
