Uninsured drivers risk fines
Over the last year, 350,000 motorists in Britain have driven without car insurance, new research has revealed.

According to price comparison site MoneyExpert.com, hundreds of thousands of drivers ran the risk of points on their licences, fines of up to £5,000 and a possible ban, as a result of their lack of cover.

The most likely offenders were found to be people aged between 18 and 24, with 120,000 admitting to driving their vehicles while uninsured.

Sean Gardner of the site, said: "It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk."

The most common excuse used by drivers was that they had not realised their cover had expired, with 46 per cent citing this, while other reasons included driving someone else's car in an emergency and being unable to afford insurance.

Last year around 150,000 vehicles were seized by police for being uninsured.
