Mid Sussex Conservative MP Nicholas Soames has been banned from driving for two months for driving a quad bike on a public road without any vehicle insurance.

Crawley magistrates' court fined the 60-year-old £200 after he was caught on camera by hunt saboteurs on New Year's Day riding the vehicle on down a public road carrying passengers who included a pregnant woman and children.

Sergeant Jon Carter, from Sussex Police's road policing unit, told Motorstoday.co.uk said that drivers of any vehicle must make sure they are insured to drive it.

"I would urge all drivers to check whether or not they are insured to drive the vehicle they are using on the road. It is the driver's responsibility to make sure that they are, even if they don't own the vehicle," he said.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, an average of two people a year die in quad bike accidents.
