The rise in fuel costs is likely to force more motorists to switch to public transport as people's finances continue to be stretched in the current economic climate, new research has revealed.

In news which could have an effect on car insurance costs, a study by FirstGroup found almost half of the 2,220 people surveyed believe there will be a shift towards buses and trains within the next ten years.

The research found the number of people using public transport has risen by 39 per cent since November and 88 per cent claim the increase in motoring costs, which may include insurance, tax and fuel, will force more people to leave their cars at home.

Should motorists reduce their car usage it could mean fewer vehicles on the road, which may lead to fewer accidents and in turn have an impact on car insurance costs.
