More than 53 per cent of people with home or car insurance have rated the industry as excellent.

The recent Association of British Insurers' (ABI) Customer Impact Panel found customers' perceptions of the insurance sector has improved since last year, when 48 per cent of people rated it as excellent.

Despite the improvement the panel has made recommendations for next year to further improve the service provided to customers and align the scheme with Treating Customers Fairly.

Melanie Johnson, chair of the group, said the feedback is encouraging and claims the industry will continue trying to make strides in terms of customer satisfaction.

"The panel's first annual report received a very positive report … however there is more to do. We're recommending that firms review their complaint handling processes to ensure improvements continue," she said.

More than 400 providers are members of the ABI, which claims to represent the interests of insurance companies in the UK.
